Star Control Mod
The Star Control Mod is an as yet unreleased mod for Space Empires IV based on the Star Control universe. Unique features will include:
- Hull system where each race can choose a preferred hull size (Small, Medium, or Large) as a racial trait. Each trait gives 3 hulls (light, heavy, and transport) with three quality grades apiece for the light and heavy hulls. The lighter hull is intended as a combat vessel, having significant offense and defense bonuses, while the heavier hull is intended as a command vessel, having a bonus to weapons damage in the system (the ability used by stock Death Shrines). Each grade represents a tenfold organics cost increase, but the bonuses are significantly improved.
- Weapon system where each race can choose a preferred weapon class (Ballistic, Energy, or Missile) and range (Sniper - long range, Warrior - medium range, or Gladiator - short range) as racial traits. All races can use basic weapons of all nine possible types, and these weapons are arranged in a grid similar to that of the [Low Tech Mod]: to get Laser Cannon II, for instance, you must research level 2 in both Energy Weaponry and Medium Range Weaponry. However, a race choosing, for instance, Missile Weapons and Snipers (such as the Earthlings), will get extra weapons, which branch off of the main tech grid, so they could research as an additional weapon, the Thermonuclear Standoff Missile, which is superior to the standard missiles available to all races. (Note that since there are more than 9 weapons in Star Control, this will allow some races to employ weapons traditionally used by others - the Backward Utilized Tracking Torpedo is also considered a long-range missile weapon, after all! This may be rectified by the use of scale mounts for the races' preferred hull sizes, or it may be left in for variety.)
