Intelligence in Space Empires III

In Space Empires III, intelligence functions somewhat differently than it does in Space Empires IV. The intelligence dialog is found under the Empire Menu or in the icons under the menu bar in some window layouts.

Intelligence points are distributed on a percentage basis, like Space Empires III's research system, as opposed to the project method familiar to players of Space Empires IV. At the bottom of the dialog, defensive spending is allocated and the focus area of spending is decided from the options of Counter-Espionage, Counter-Sabotage, or All. Above that, each known race is listed and can be selected. On the right side of the panel, spending can be directed to either espionage or sabotage projects. Note that this spending is from the global "pool" of intelligence points and is allocated individually to each empire.

Espionage

Espionage is the recovery or theft of information by less-than-honest means. In Space Empires III, spending towards espionage projects can be either universal ("All") or focused. Universal spending is unfocused and may lead to any sort of information recovery from the options below whereas focused spending is directed towards one of the following:

  • Ships
  • Research
  • Planets
  • Politics
  • Events
  • Ship Designs
  • Facilities
  • Expenses
  • Intelligence

Sabotage

Sabotage is a somewhat less... pacific... activity than espionage. It involves the disruption, damage, or destruction of an enemy race's projects and property. Like espionage, sabotage spending is either unversal (again, the "All" option) or focused. The possible focus options (and universal results) are:

  • Ships
  • Facilities
  • Productions
  • Populations
  • Planetary Rebellion
  • Research
  • Blamed Sabotage
  • Planet Value
  • Units
