Carrier Battles Mod
From SEWiki
Carrier Battles is a mod for Space Empires IV which is probably the least stock-like of any mod, having been written almost completely from scratch.
Fighters play a larger role in combat than their "chaff" role in stock, without being overpowerful - in CBmod, you must have a balanced force to succeed. Most fighter hulls cannot move outside of combat, and those that can move at one sector per turn and have little space for anything but supply tanks.
Weapons are completely redone from stock; gone are Phased Polaron Beams and Capital Ship Missiles - there are now exactly four types (though four quite balanced types) of direct fire weapons and seven types of missiles. However there are a good number of mounts to use, and these are completely un-stocklike, too! For direct fire weapons you have five gun-bore mounts ranging from 20mm (piddly flak cannons) to 100mm (just THINK about how big a gun that is!), and for missiles you have your choice of External Racks (extra supply usage but smaller size) and Missile Tubes (your standard missiles).
CBmod additionally has missiles which target fighters (and other missiles!), leaky armor, leaky shields, leaky intel, and a plethora of other features which have crept into other mods!
One of the most striking features of CBmod is the racial setup. Many of the traditional characteristics and racial trait choices have been restricted, but this allows the culture choices to be made extremely powerful yet balanced. The available cultures in CBmod include everything from Disposable Society to Preservationists, from Brainiacs to Efficient Workers, and from Berzerkers to Pacifists. Each has huge effects, often doubling or halving relevant traits such as build rates, maintenance, combat skills, and research rates. Amidst this extreme variety, players take up all sides, and there is strong disagreement on which culture is best. Only the neutral culture is universally derided, since it has no bonuses or penalties.
